A1 Belarus , until 2019 velcom , is a private provider of telecommunications, ICT and content services in Belarus. This company is the second largest mobile operator in Belarus and supplies the population with GSM 900/1800, UMTS ( WCDMA / HSDPA / HSUPA / HSPA + ) and 4G (via beCloud network). Since 2017, velcom has also been offering Internet access services based on GPON and Ethernet technologies in all the capitals of Belarus, in Bobruysk , Retschyza , Svetlogorsk and Dobrusch, as well as IPTV services under the VOKA brand.

On April 16, 1999, the company started its business in the field of sales of services and goods for mobile communications under the name SP OOO “Mobile digital communication” and became the first GSM mobile operator in Belarus (the first mobile operator is NMT operator BelSel ).

At the beginning of commercial operation, 10 base stations were introduced (nine of them in Minsk , one base station was installed in Oreschniki on the way to the Minsk National Airport). By the summer of 2000, all of Belarus' regional cities were connected to the velcom network. The mobile network was expanded along the Minsk-Brest-Orsha motorway and in the nearby settlements. Since April 23, 2007, the velcom cellular network has been available to the entire urban population of Belarus. In April 2019 the first GSM network was introduced by the mobile operator on the territory of the Polish State Radio-Ecological Protected Area.

Velcom participants have been able to send and receive SMS since March 15, 2001 and MMS since June 2005 .

On June 2, 2003, the GPRS service was introduced. In December 2005, EDGE technology was made available in three areas of Belarus.

On March 30, 2006, velcom was the first company in Belarus to test the third generation of the mobile radio system. The 3G network was expanded in 27 days. The commercial launch of the 3G network in Minsk and Gomel took place on March 17, 2010. In February 2016, Velcom was the first company in Belarus to introduce a 3G network in the 900 MHz band. And in May 2019, the company improved 3G network bandwidth by adding the fourth carrier frequency in the 2100 MHz band to the base stations.

In November 2007 the A1 Telekom Austria Group acquired a 70 percent share in velcom. The planned acquisition of the remaining 30 percent took place in October 2010. Since June 2019, velcom | A1 use the Internet in the networks of the A1 Telekom Austria Group according to the domestic tariff.

In May 2008 the company was rebranded and the logo and name changed to UP "velcom".

In May 2009 the company signed an exclusive contract with OOO SP “BelSel” for the provision of broadband internet access services based on CDMA2000 (EV-DO Rev.A). The services were provided until May 16, 2013.

In 2014 the online shop velcom.by was opened, the digital television VOKA was introduced and the construction of our own data center began.

In 2017, velcom became a major player in the Belarusian fixed line communications market through the acquisition of a number of internet service providers. In the same year, velcom was the first mobile operator in the world to take a completely virtual core of the mobile network into commercial operation.

In 2017, velcom received permission to commercially introduce the narrow-band NB-IoT network for the Internet of Things in Belarus. By 2019, this technology had been introduced in Minsk and all regional cities of Belarus.

Since April 2018, velcom participants have been able to make calls over Wi-Fi using VoWiFi technology (Voice over Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Calling). In the summer of the same year, velcom, in cooperation with ZAO “Bank Reschenije” and with the international payment system Visa, launched a virtual V-Banking card with cashback, which is suitable for paying for various services.

On March 21, 2019, A1 began providing the 4G data transfer services. At the end of 2019, the 4G network became available for A1 subscribers in all major cities in the 1800 MHz frequency range. In December 2019, the company announced the three-year strategic partnership with the infrastructure provider beCloud to develop the fourth generation of mobile communications (4G) in Belarus. From 2020 A1 will provide its infrastructure for base stations as well as a transport network based on hybrid, microwave and fiber optic lines in order to make the 4G network available in the 800 MHz frequency range in rural areas.

The company began a rebranding on April 8, 2019. During the transition period until the end of the year, the two-brand velcom | A1 inserted. The uniform A1 brand has been used since August 12, 2019.

In April 2019 velcom introduced | A1 in 18 electric trains of the Belarusian State Railways free Wi-Fi internet access. In June 2019, the provider introduced 38 new base stations along the railroad to improve the quality of mobile communication in trains.

From April to May 2019, velcom | A1 all tunnels on the Maskoŭskaja and Aŭtazavodskaja lines of the Minsk Metro are supplied with mobile communications.

On August 12, 2019, A1 was the first smartphone to be presented under its own brand - A1 Alpha. On the same day, A1 was the first company in the country to introduce virtual eSIM cards and in November of the same year made it possible to switch to the eSIM card online in the user account.

On November 12, 2019, a joint Belarusian-Austrian declaration to strengthen cooperation in the field of telecommunications, information and communication technologies and the 5G broadband network was signed with the participation of A1. A1 applied for the allocation of the frequency range that meets the requirements of the international 5G standards and is developing a 5G cellular network architecture.

In December 2019, A1 became the first company in the country to introduce VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology.

Owner and management

Until January 2005 69.9% of the velcom shares were owned by a Cypriot company SB Telecom. ZAO “Beltechexport” held 30% of the shares and RUP “Beltelecom” 0.1% of the shares. In January 2005 the state also became the owner of the company's shares: it acquired 30.9% of the shares, while SB Telecom held 49%, ZAO “Beltechexport” 20% and RUP “Beltelecom” 0.1% of the shares.

In August 2007, the Cypriot company SB Telecom bought 100% of the company's shares for $ 556 million.

At the beginning of October 2007 the Austrian company A1 Telekom Austria Group signed an agreement for the purchase of 70% of SB Telecom shares and in October 2010 for the purchase of the remaining 30% of the shares.

Mobile communication

A1 supplies the population in Belarus with GSM 900/1800, UMTS ( WCDMA / HSDPA / HSUPA / HSPA + ) and 4G. Participants have access to basic services (voice connection, data transfer, SMS, MMS, Voicemail) as well as additional services (roaming, business and entertainment services).

Fixed line communication

In September 2014, the construction of a dedicated fiber optic network for legal entities began.

In the years 2016-2018, velcom took a number of deals to acquire Belarusian internet service providers such as "Atlant Telecom" ( Minsk ), "Ajchyna plus" (Minsk), "Belinfonet" (Minsk), "Garant" ( Gomel . Interactive digital television

Digital television is available under the VOKA brand. For velcom landline customers, the service works on the basis of IPTV technology and offers more than 120 channels (30 of which are in HD quality). In the networks of other mobile and landline providers, the service is provided on the basis of OTT technology and comprises more than 100 TV channels. VOKA supports various interactive functions: pause, rewind and archiving of the TV programs as well as the option to continue watching programs on another device. The films, cartoons and series from online cinemas MEGOGO, Amediateka, START, ivi are available to all service users. The service is available for mobile Android and iOS devices, for Smart TV based on Tizen , WebOS , Android TV , via consoles Redbox Mini, Xiaomi Mi Box 3, Apple TV (via AirPlay). The video service can be used on PCs via the VOKA application for Windows or on the website.

In 2018, the VOKA service created its own media content: "Our football" and "Our hockey" sections with broadcasts of matches from Belarusian clubs and national teams, live broadcasts of concerts, music festivals and other entertainment events as well as e-sports tournaments. Users can also access the “CINEVOKA - Belarusian cinema” section, which contains well-known films with professional dubbing in Belarusian.

On January 28, 2019, the largest content library in the country in 4K resolution (Ultra High Definition) was published on VOKA video service.

Cinema VOKA CINEMA

The VOKA CINEMA multiplex (velcom cinema until August 2019) was opened in August 2017 in cooperation with the Silver Screen cinema chain. The cinema has seven high-tech cinema halls.

In 2018, a velcom-Silver-ART project was started based on velcom-cinema, which provides for the showing of films outside the mainstream.

In August 2019 the first ScreenX cinema hall in Eastern Europe with a 270-degree screen was opened.

In September 2019, VOKA and Silver Screen started a joint project “Tutejschyn Studyja” to translate new films into Belarusian. The films "Zeroville" and "The Wedding Year" were the first to be dubbed.

VOKA Smartfilm

With the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, A1 has held an annual festival of mobile cinema since 2010. From 2016, the festival took on an international character. Every year the number of plants and participants from different countries increases. In 2019 the competition program comprised 334 short films from more than 60 countries. The deadline for submitting works for the ninth International Festival of Mobile Cinema VOKA Smartfilm began on February 5, 2020.

E-sports

In February 2020, with the help of A1, the Republican Social Association "Belarusian Federation of Computer Sports" was founded and registered. The non-profit organization was established to promote computer sports in the Republic of Belarus, to develop and support professional players, coaches and referees, to hold competitions and to establish international contacts.

Data center and ICT services

In September 2017, one of the largest data centers (RZ) in Belarus was introduced in Minsk. The data center takes up an area of ​​7,500 m². The data center took more than 2 years to build and cost $ 20 million.

The data center has an international Uptime Institute Tier III certificate for high reliability in the design and facility categories. Four data center modules are designed for 800 server racks and have their own optical ring, namely 43 kilometers of network with a capacity of 1 Tbit / sec. The first module for 200 server racks has now been put into operation.

The data center currently offers the following services: placement of server hardware and network devices (colocation), rental of virtual resources for setting up the IT infrastructure (IaaS based on the VMware platform), data backup and recovery (Baas based on Veeam Backup and Restore), rental of server hardware and network devices (HaaS service), cloud storage based on Veeam Cloud Connect, virtual infrastructure voblaka based on Exoscale technology as well as use of Microsoft software products based on subscription conditions and extended technical support and Maintenance of Oracle databases.

In March 2019, the range of services was expanded to include security services. The data center was certified by the operational-analytical center at the President of the Republic of Belarus and introduced the “Cloud-62” service, which was developed for legal entities that work with confidential information with a high degree of security.

In August 2019, A1's data center confirmed compliance with the ISO 27001 standard.

Solar power plant

In summer 2016, velcom commissioned a solar power plant with 85,000 solar collectors near Bragin (Gomel area). The solar power plant is located in the area that was contaminated by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and is therefore of little use for agriculture. Velcom laid around 800 kilometers of cable to connect all the solar collectors.

In October 2017, velcom opened the first solar-powered communication base station in Belarus, located in the Lubanski district in the Minsk region.

The unitary company "A1" has its own network of sales and service centers with 90 offices in 32 cities in Belarus and 10 centers for fixed line customers. Corporate social responsibility

The main areas of corporate social responsibility are helping children, preserving national values ​​and the environment.

Child aid

A non-profit project #velcombegom is one of the company's largest social initiatives: from 2015 to 2019, 2 to 3 benefit events were held annually. The aim of this project is to support the health facilities for children and to promote a healthy lifestyle and running. The beneficiaries of this project were Republican rehabilitation centers for children, the boarding school for disabled children with special features of psychophysical development and other medical facilities for children. Over 700,000 Belarusian rubles were transferred to the beneficiaries as financial support over the course of the project. A1 supports the initiatives that increase interest in Belarusian national heritage, traditions, history, culture and art.

From 2016 to 2019, the company implemented the “Belarusian Weekends” project together with the “Kinakong” company.
