The Telekom Austria AG went in 1998 from the Post and Telekom Austria AG produced (PTA), the predecessor was the State Postal and Telegraph Administration (PTV) . In November 2000 the company went public on the Vienna Stock Exchange and on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) , and in 2007 it was de-listed on the NYSE.

In June 2000, the umbrella brand Jet2Web was created for around 15 million euros . The name Telekom Austria , which is often associated with civil servants, should be replaced by a dynamic brand identity. But the new brand could not prevail and was felt by many to be untrustworthy. Therefore it was discontinued in June 2002 and the company name Telekom Austria was used again as a brand with a new logo.

In June 2006, Telekom Austria AG was split into two independent companies: Telekom Austria Group as the strategic holding company and Telekom Austria FixNet AG with the separated operational fixed-line business . The Telekom Austria Group was the parent company of the existing mobilkom austria AG and the newly founded Telekom Austria FixNet AG . The two Austrian subsidiaries were initially positioned side by side as sister companies. Just one year later, Telekom Austria FixNet AG was renamed Telekom Austria TA AG , but this did not change the group structure.

In 2010, the landline and mobile phone subsidiaries were finally merged into Telekom Austria TA AG and renamed A1 Telekom Austria . Until the merger, Telekom Austria TA AG ( fixed network ) and mobilkom austria AG ( mobile communications ) were market leaders in their respective segments in the Austrian telecommunications market. The successor company A1 Telekom Austria now holds these market shares . In the course of this organizational merger, the foreign subsidiaries of mobilkom austria AG were transferred to the Telekom Austria Group . These are now directly subordinate to the holding company and the new A1 Telekom Austria is limited to the Austrian business.

In the summer of 2011, criminal misconduct by members of the company's board of directors became public in several areas between 2004 and 2006. In public these were summarized as the telecom affair .

In June 2012, the Mexican telecommunications company América Móvil acquired 23% of the shares in Telekom Austria from investor Ronny Pecik and increased its stake to around 51% in July 2014. As of November 2, 2017, America Movil directly and indirectly holds 51.0% of the shares, Österreichische Beteiligungs AG holds 28.42% and the remaining 20.58% are in free float.

At the end of 2018, the A1 Telekom Austria Group had 18,705 employees and generated around EUR 4.47 billion. The company's purpose is national and international wired and wireless telecommunication services, including company network data services, internet services and information technology (IT).
