The A286 is a Class I road established between Milford and Chichester in 1923. It is interrupted by the A272 in Midhurst. In Chichester it ran to the central square “Market Cross”. It was later extended to Birdham, where it ends today at a roundabout where two Class II streets meet. In Chichester it no longer runs through the city center, but on a ring road around the city center, which is completely signposted with the number A286. In Midhurst, the A286 has been given a westerly route so that it no longer crosses the city center.
