Atlantic Star

The Atlantic Sail departing from the port of Hamburg

The G4 series is a series of ConRo ships operated by the Atlantic Container Line shipping company . The five ships were commissioned in July 2012 and were built between 2013 and 2017 at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HZS) shipyard in Shanghai. Since their completion, they have been used in the shipping company's transatlantic service, where they replaced the generation of the ACL G3 series commissioned in 1985/86 . You can transport containers as well as RoRo cargo and vehicles at the same time . Like their predecessors, they are the world's largest units of this type of ship.

details

The ships are designed as versatile ConRo units with a midship deckhouse and ice class . The ships have a RoRo ramp arranged aft to starboard with a load capacity of 420 tons, but no loading gear .

The basic concept of the ships comes from International Maritime Advisors (IMA) from Dragør, who wanted a Conro ship type with a lower ballast water requirement. The draft of the G4 series based on this was created by Knud E. Hansen from Helsingør and was based on the experience with the G3 ships that have been in operation for three decades, the requirements of the meanwhile significantly increased cargo volume and the desire of the shipping company for more economical ship units.

The ships have a division of the holds in container and RoRo areas, the latter being limited to the midship area below the superstructure and the container area occupying the parts of the ship in front of and behind the superstructures. Through this division, a deeper stowage in the ship, better stability values and thus lower necessary amounts of ballast water are achieved. The container holds are with cell guides provided and through hatches for "lift on / lift off" -Loading accessible. Cell guides are also provided on deck for stowing containers. Refrigerated containers can also be connected there. The ro-ro area with height-adjustable decks is loaded and unloaded via the rear ramp.

The container capacity of the ships is around 3800  TEU and 28,900 m² Ro-Ro storage space on which around 760 Ro-Ro units and 1307 vehicles can be stowed.

The ships are powered by a two-stroke diesel engine of the type Wärtsilä 8RT-flex68D manufactured under license by the Hudong Heavy Machinery Company . Continue to auxiliary diesel and an emergency diesel-generator. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by bow and stern thrusters .
