AMECC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AMECC (Brazilian “Associação Menores Com Cristo”, in English “Community of the little ones with Christ”) refers to a children's village in Guarabira ( Brazil , Paraíba state ) and the associated Brazilian sponsoring association. The AMECC is a charitable and largely donation - funded non-governmental organization .

Origin and development

The AMECC was founded in 1990 by the Catholic clergyman Gerd Brandstetter. At first, the youth judge of the city of Guarabira only assigned him the guardianship of a single youth. Little by little, more street children and young people sought refuge with Gerd Brandstetter. In 1993, a large donation made it possible to acquire a six hectare site on the outskirts of Guarabira. This area now houses the children's village with its residential buildings, the “São Rafael” primary school, a kindergarten and administration building. The AMECC currently looks after around 230 socially disadvantaged children and young people. 60 children either live permanently in the children's village or are looked after there all day. 50 small children attend the kindergarten, a total of 160 children and young people attend the elementary school of the children's village. The AMECC employs around 40 psychologists, social workers, teachers and other assistants.

supporter

Most of the support is organized by the German association “Gerd Brandstetter - Kinderdorf Guarabira eV” and the “Kinderdorf Guarabira Foundation ”, each based in Altötting . The association has over 250 members. He collects private donations and organizes a sponsorship program for the children's village. The AMECC mainly relies on donations from German-speaking countries, in particular from the Bavarian diocese of Passau and the city of Altötting . In addition to many individuals, school classes, clubs and companies also support the maintenance of the children's village through sponsorship and regular donation campaigns. In addition, celebrities also advertise the AMECC, such as the former Bishop of Passau Wilhelm Schraml , the cabaret artist Bruno Jonas and Stephanie von Pfuel .

Youth exchange

Over the years, more than 70 young adults from Germany, Austria and Switzerland have volunteered in the AMECC project. In return, Brazilian young people were given the opportunity to temporarily live in Germany and do internships or au pair stays. The children's village has been a weltwärts project recognized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development since 2008 .
