history

It was founded on February 9, 1963 by the Austrian entrepreneur Julius Meinl IV , who also headed the association as president until 2008. After his death his son Julius Meinl V took over his office. Shortly afterwards this was given by Prim Dr. Walter Ebm replaced. Robert Michl was appointed President at the Annual General Meeting in May 2019.

Goals and Activities

  • Reduction of costs in the GA through simplified and pragmatic regulations
  • Adjustment of maintenance requirements for private aviation
  • Abolition of the duty of a manager
  • Simplification and cost reduction for radio and language tests (LPC)
  • More practical access to IFR in order to increase the proportion of IFR (USA 40%, EU 5%)
  • Expansion of the range of workshops and information events

As a representative of the interests of general aviation, AOPA-Austria is regularly asked by the BMVIT for comments on draft laws and regulations and is therefore officially involved in the relevant assessment process.

successes

In 2019, an ordinance issued by the BMVIT created an option for flying without a manager. AOPA Austria was heavily involved in this through discussions with the ministry and Austro Control .

Furthermore, AOPA-Austria, together with the Austrian Aeroclub, is recognized as a major stakeholder in the BMVIT's sports aviation project. The association's suggestions were incorporated into draft regulations.

Due to the close cooperation with AOPA-Germany , an article of AOPA-Austria is published in their print medium AOPA Letter in every issue. The magazine appears 6 times a year and is also distributed to the Austrian members electronically and in paper form.

AOPA Austria has recorded a significant increase in membership for several years. In 2015 the membership was almost 300, in August 2019 518 members were registered. The reasons for this lay in increased activities in the context of lobbying and public relations, as well as a group insurance for aircraft accidents introduced in 2017.

Public events / public relations

The association regularly organizes lectures under the title "Rusty Pilots". The title was taken over by the US sister club and was originally a series of lectures for pilots who want to get back into the cockpit after a long break. The lecture series in Austria deals with current topics in general aviation. The speakers are mostly employees from the AERO industry and from authorities and give lectures on current topics such as airspace structure, flight medicine, avionics and general aviation technology. Individual presentations are made available by AOPA-Austria on a YouTube channel (AOPA Austria Thek).

Together with AOPA-Germany and AOPA-Switzerland, AOPA-Austria appears annually at the AERO trade fair in Friedrichshafen. The focus is on maintaining contacts with members, partner associations, authorities and the AERO industry.
