After completing his degree in banking and finance at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in 1981, Julius Meinl worked for the Swiss Bank Corporation in London and for Brown Brothers Harriman in New York. He was the heir of the Julius Meinl grocery chain , which he dissolved except for the traditional Viennese location Meinl am Graben and sold to the Billa , Spar and Delhaize chains , which incorporated them into their groups. The Julius Meinl company bought a bank in 1969 and merged it in 1979 with its savings and credit association to form Meinl Bank. Julius Meinl V. took over the management of Meinl Bank as CEO in 1983 . From 1987 to December 28, 2007 he was CEO of the bank and in this role played a key role in the bank's successful expansion into Eastern Europe.

From January 2014 to 2017 Julius Meinl was having a Jewish mother and grandmother, president of the Euro Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC), a member organization of the World Jewish Congress (World Jewish Congress / WJC). Meinl sees the fight against anti-Semitism as one of his priorities. As President of the EAJC, Meinl is also represented on the Steering Committee of the WJC. In September 2018 he was appointed Commissioner for Combating Antisemitism by the WJC .

Julius Meinl V. has been married to Ariane Neuberger, formerly head of the Bank Austria Kunstforum, since 2012 . This marriage took place after the divorce in 2009 from Franziska, called "Spängi", daughter of the commercial graphic artist Preuschl von Haldenburg, who previously worked in a Geneva bank and as a model. She married Maximilian Prinz zu Fürstenberg in 2015, for whom it was also the second marriage. Franziska died in 2016 at the age of 53 and is the mother of Julius VI, who was born around 1989 and works in the London banking industry. Around two months before his mother's death, on July 2, 2016, he married Olivia Christine Stolt-Nielsen Holten, a daughter of the Norwegian Stolt-Nielsen dynasty. For the occasion, they rented the Oslo Opera House, which was otherwise closed that day.

Legal problems since 2007

The real estate fund company Meinl European Land sparked intense media interest in the summer of 2007 when it became known that the proceeds from a capital increase in the spring had mainly been used to buy back their own securities, without informing investors about what violated Austrian law. On December 31, 2014, charges of alleged breach of trust were brought against Julius Meinl V. and four other organs of Meinl Bank.

In April 2009 he was arrested in Vienna on suspicion of serious commercial fraud, breach of trust and "commission slavery" and taken into custody. Two nights later he was released again on payment of a deposit of 100 million euros - an Austrian record. Four years later, 90 million was reimbursed as the total was overestimated.

The assets of the once respected Meinl merchant family were estimated at 2 billion euros in 2008.

On April 17, 2015, it was announced that the Vienna Higher Regional Court had dismissed the charges against Julius Meinl and other accused. The preliminary investigation was thus reopened.

In February 2018, the investigations into a distribution of a dividend in kind of around 212 million euros were discontinued. Investigations into investor fraud in connection with serious commercial fraud to the detriment of investors in connection with certificates from Meinl European Land , in which many thousands of Austrians lost money, are still ongoing. The allegation is to have deceived investors with misleading advertising. In December 2018, the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office brought charges against Meinl, Peter Weinzierl and one other person for embezzlement to the detriment of Meinl Bank. Meinl appealed against the indictment.
