The Alte Süderelbe station of the port railway in Moorburg is a marshalling yard of the Hamburg Port Authority. It was put into operation in 1995 and retrofitted for 750 meter long trains in spring 2007.

The marshalling yard, known as the station part of the Port of Hamburg station, serves to develop the western port area. From here, wagons are fed via district train stations or directly to the loading and unloading points, and from there they are assembled into trains. The marshalling yard is connected to the Harburg – Cuxhaven railway line via Hausbruch station .

In addition to the Maschen marshalling yard , currently the largest marshalling yard in Europe, the Alte Süderelbe is the largest container terminal in Europe. In addition to the container transports, block trains weighing up to 6,000 tons with iron ore to Salzgitter and Eisenhüttenstadt also start from here .

A short track branch on the eastern edge leads to the neighboring Altenwerder container terminal of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG ( HHLA ).
