The 8th A Dal took place on February 23, 2019 and was the Hungarian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ).

Joci Pápai emerged as the winner with the song Az én apám . Pápai won A Dal 2017, making him the first interpreter to win the show several times. He is also Hungary's first interpreter in the competition, which represents the country more than once.

As in the previous year , there were again three preliminary rounds, two semi-finals and a final in 2019. Ten entries were therefore presented in each preliminary round, one of which reached the semifinals through televoting and five through jury voting. So there were nine songs per semi-final, of which four reached the final in each semi-final. Eight performers appeared in the final. In the first voting round, the jury then determined which four participants would make it to the second voting round. Ultimately, it was then decided 100% by televoting who will win A Dal 2019.

This year the jury consists again of four people. Feró Nagy and Lilla Vincze are new to the team. Misi Mező and Miklós Both were already part of the A Dal jury in 2018.

Prices

Prizes will be awarded again in 2019. Once again, Best Lyrics of A Dal 2019 or the best text at A Dal 2019 and New Talent of A Dal 2019 , the biggest new discovery of the show, will be awarded. These winners will be decided by this year's A Dal jury.

A new logo for A Dal was presented for the first time in 2019, replacing the old logo from 2012 to 2018.

Moderation

On December 3, 2018, MTVA announced that Freddie , who had already moderated A Dal in 2018, will be moderating again in 2019. However, it will do this together with Bogi Dallos, who participated in A Dal in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Choice of contribution

From October 30, 2018 to November 8, 2018, contributions could be submitted to MTVA. In contrast to other preliminary rounds, the applicant must be able to show that he has released at least one album or had a national radio hit in order to participate. You must have a contract with a record company and a contract with a music management company. In addition, only contributions in Hungarian , English or another minority language of Hungary were allowed. Only Hungarian composers were allowed to participate. However, on November 7th, MTVA announced that contributions can now be submitted until November 15th. This extension of the deadline was carried out because, according to MTVA, there was great interest on the part of musicians and composers in submitting contributions.

On December 3, 2018, MTVA presented the 30 participants of this year's A Dal. Among them are some returnees who have already participated in past A Dal issues.

András Kállay-Saunders took part in the A Dal most often by far . Already in 2012 and 2013 he tried to win as a solo artist, but only succeeded in 2014. Despite his victory, he returned in 2016 with his band Kállay Saunders Band . They also participated in 2017. In 2019 he will compete with a new band, The Middletonz , which is his sixth participation. This is followed by Szabó Ádám who participated as a solo artist in 2013, 2015 and 2017. In 2018 he then took part as part of the duo yesyes , where they reached second place. Köteles Leander will also take part for the fourth time in 2019, having participated in 2015 with the band Leander Rising . In 2017 and 2018 he took part with the band Leander Kills . Oláh Gergő also took part as a solo artist in 2015 and 2016, while in 2017 he took part as part of the group Roma Soul . Vavra Bence participated as a solo artist in 2016 and 2018. Berkes Olivér has also participated in the past. This was the case in 2016 and 2017.

Other returnees, each with one previous participation, are Antal Timi (2015), Kyra (2017) and Petruska (2016). An A Dal winner is also returning, namely Joci Pápai , who won the show in 2017.

The first semi-final took place on February 9, 2019. Here nine participants competed against each other. After two voting rounds, three participants qualified for the final. In the first round of voting, three finalists were determined by a combination of jury voting and televoting. In the second round, the remaining six participants had to face a second televoting round, where the fourth finalist was determined.

On February 18, 2019, MTVA announced that they had to disqualify the singer Petruska. His song Help Me Out Of Here is a plagiarism by White Sky from Vampire Weekend's, which was released in 2016, according to a specially compiled commission from MTVA . The starting place in the final got Oláh Gergő from the second semi-final with his song Hozzád bújnék .

Second semifinals

The second semi-final took place on February 16, 2019. Here nine participants competed against each other. After two voting rounds, three participants qualified for the final. In the first round of voting, three finalists were determined by a combination of jury voting and televoting. In the second round, the remaining six participants had to face a second televoting round, where the fourth finalist was determined.

On February 18, 2019, MTVA announced that Petruska had been disqualified from the first semifinals with his song Help Me Out Of Here . Oláh Gergő received his starting place in the final with his song Hozzád bújnék .

The final took place on February 23, 2019. Here eight participants competed against each other. The voting process, however, was different than in the semifinals. In the first voting round, the four jurors selected four participants for the second voting round. They distributed 4, 6, 8 and 10 points to the four best participants. In the second voting round, the spectators then determine Joci Pápai as the winner.
