A Resistance (Original Title: Hanggeo: Yu Gwan-sun Iyagi 'Resistance: The Story of Yu Gwan-sun') is a 2019 South Korean film directed by Joe Min-ho. It is about the life of Korean independence activist Yu Gwan-sun in the Seodaemun prison of the Japanese military police . Yu is embodied by Ko Ah-sung in the main role.

action

In 1919, when Korea is occupied by Japan , Yu Gwan-sun is detained in Seodaemun Prison after the March First Movement's independence demonstration . The student Yu Gwan-sun then organized demonstrations in her hometown and surrounding cities. Her parents are shot dead by Japanese soldiers. You and your brother are going to jail. Since she did not give in to the Japanese authorities, she was given a relatively long prison term.

In prison, she is put in a small cell with many other women. There is just enough space to stand. The other inmates also took part in the demonstrations. One woman, from her home village, was detained when the Japanese police asked her to bring her son back to life. She blames her loss. However, other inmates defend her. She befriends them. When the women start to sing, the guard tries to stop it. But they don't stop. So the guards step in and get everyone out of their cells.

Soon the guards try to bribe the older women, who are mostly sitting, with additional food to find out who is causing the disturbance. A pregnant woman points to Yu Gwan-sun. She is then interrogated and tortured. The women now stick together even stronger. Yu tries to organize a protest for the anniversary of March 1st, but is never given the date. But after a while she can find out. In her cell she calls: Daehan Dongnip Manse ('Long live Korea's independence'). Her cell mates as well as the inmates of the other cells follow her example. The spectacle can be heard outside the prison, so more people join the calls.

Yu Gwan-sun is tortured more and everyone else is released. They want to reach out more to Koreans to prevent further uprisings. Yu dies in prison two days before she is released.

reception

A Resistance kicked off in South Korean theaters on February 27, 2019 and reached more than 1.1 million viewers by April 4.

Yoon Min-sik of the Korea Herald rated the film negatively. He calls the plot uninspiring and defacing the story of Yu Gwan-sun is unforgivable. The film didn't take the chance to become an inspiring drama with a feminist core. The film is too direct and the dialogues are unnatural. Although some of the inmates like Yu played important roles in the resistance, the characters are not used and fade into the background. Also, you can hardly tell from the fact that Yu was tortured. The only positive things are the acting achievements and the general attention that the historical personalities receive from the cinema release.
