In 1916 she attended the Methodist Ewha School (now Ewha Womans University ) in Seoul on the recommendation of the missionary Alice Sharp . After the Japanese governor general closed these and other schools because of the unrest in the movement of March 1 , 1919, she returned to her homeland.

Ryu was sent to prison for a short time and her school was closed. With the help of her family and friends, she planned a peaceful demonstration in her province on April 1st. The day before the demonstration, Ryu lit a fire on the mountain as a signal. The next day, more than 2,000 people gathered in a market square to take part in the demonstration. Japanese police shot at the people, and around 19 of them, including Ryu's parents, died. Ryu Gwansun was sent to Seodaemun Prison , where she died at the age of 17.
