Ryu Gwansun , also known as Yu Gwansun (born December 16, 1902 , † September 28, 1920 ) was a Korean independence activist who belonged to the Christian Church and protested against Japanese colonial rule .
childhood
Ryu Gwansun was born in a small farming village in 1902. According to her brother, she taught herself the Korean alphabet, Hangul . In 1916 she attended the Methodist Ewha School (now Ewha Womans University ) in Seoul on the recommendation of the missionary Alice Sharp . After the Japanese governor general closed these and other schools because of the unrest in the movement of March 1 , 1919, she returned to her homeland.
Demonstrations
Ryu Gwansun and her school friends joined the March First Movement despite their teacher recommending not to participate in the revolution. Ryu was sent to prison for a short time and her school was closed. With the help of her family and friends, she planned a peaceful demonstration in her province on April 1st. The day before the demonstration, Ryu lit a fire on the mountain as a signal. The next day, more than 2,000 people gathered in a market square to take part in the demonstration. Japanese police shot at the people, and around 19 of them, including Ryu's parents, died. Ryu Gwansun was sent to Seodaemun Prison , where she died at the age of 17.
