A Time Out of War is an American short film directed by Denis Sanders in 1954 . The film is based on the short story The Pickets by Robert W. Chambers .
At the Academy Awards in 1955 , the film was awarded an Oscar .
content
The film is set on a river during the American Civil War . Two Union soldiers hold a position on one bank, a Confederate soldier is directly opposite on the other bank.
The parties negotiate a ceasefire that should last an hour. During this hour the men get closer, even if they have different goals. They exchange tobacco, fish together and develop respect for one another.

The brothers Denis and Terry Sanders were both students at UCLA. With eleven other students (three as actors and eight as staff) and a budget of $ 2,000, of which $ 700 came from the university, it was shot at a location on the Santa Ynez River near Santa Barbara.
Awards
In 1955 the film was awarded an Oscar in the category Best Short Film (two film roles) .
At the ceremony of the British Film Academy Awards was A Time Out of War , a special prize awarded to the film also for the United Nations Award was nominated.
The film won the short film award at the Venice International Film Festival .
