Denis Sanders

Denis Sanders (born January 21, 1929 in New York City , † December 10, 1987 in San Diego , California ) was an American film director , film producer and screenwriter .

Life

Denis Sanders was the son of a New York architect and designer and film producer Altina Schinasi . Like his younger brother Terry Sanders , he studied at the University of California, Los Angeles . He made his first short film with Terry in 1951 ( Subject: Narcotics ). With his thesis A Time Out of War , which he shot with Terry and other classmates, including Corey Allen , he won the 1955 Oscar for best short film . Denis and Terry graduated with a Master of Arts .

In the following years, Denis Sanders worked increasingly on feature films. In 1954 he and Terry wrote the screenplay for the war drama The Naked and the Dead, based on a novel by Norman Mailer . In 1959 he directed the drama Crime & Punishment, USA , in which George Hamilton made his debut in a movie. In the following film War Hunt (1962), awarded the Silver Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival , Robert Redford and Tom Skerritt made their debut . Sanders was also active for television and shot individual episodes for various TV series.

In 1969 Denis turned to documentary film. For the 1969 short film Czechoslovakia 1968 , a documentary about the Prague Spring , he received his second Oscar, this time for best documentary short , which he shared with Robert M. Fresco .

Until 1982 Denis Sanders was responsible for four more documentaries, a documentary short film and a feature film. In addition to his film and television work, Denis Sanders was a professor at San Diego State University. From 1980 he lectured there. At the age of 58, he died of a heart attack on December 10, 1987 at his home in San Diego. Denis Sanders left wife Sherry Shirley and three children Peter, Julie and Victoria. His son Peter Sanders is also active in the film industry.
