The Portuguese-language A Voz de Timor (The Voice of Timor ) was the first newspaper in the Portuguese Timor colony . It was published by the Portuguese government and was the most important print medium there , alongside the Seara magazine of the Diocese of Dili , which was discontinued in 1973 . The A Voz de Timor was published weekly from August 16, 1959 until it was discontinued in 1975 .

Many Timorese, who later played a role in independence policy, worked for the A Voz de Timor . They included José Ramos-Horta , Francisco Borja da Costa and Xanana Gusmão , among others . Director was Francisco Lopes da Cruz . The journalists were selected based on their knowledge and intellectual abilities. In accordance with the political attitudes of the individual employees, political comments were also made that dealt critically with the Portuguese dictatorship and colonial rule. For example, because of its anti-colonial articles, Ramos-Horta was exiled to Mozambique for two years . Back in Timor, he wrote the article The Myth and Reality , which brought him back into the crosshairs of the secret police . Other political articles have appeared from his pen. Only the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1975 prevented Ramos-Horta from being exiled again.

The local Timorese culture was also dealt with. The poet and author Inácio de Moura published Legends of the Kemak in A Voz de Timor .
