Abéché ( Arabic أبشي, DMG ʾAbischī ) is a city in eastern Chad . It is the capital of the Wadai (Ouaddai) region, on the border with the Darfur region in Sudan .

Abéché is traditionally one of the most important trade hubs in Sahela Africa, a large part of the trans-Saharan trade in goods and salt passes through the city into the 21st century. In addition to modern (imported) goods, especially cattle, salt, dates and indigo are traded.

With the Adam Barka University, Abéché is the second university town in the country after the capital N'Djamena , but with fewer faculties. There are several high schools, including the Lycée Franco-Arabe and the École Téchnique, a Catholic church dedicated to St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, the only post office in the region, and a hospital.

Abéché is the largest garrison town of the Armée National du Tchad (ANT) in the east of the country, with the French colonial barracks on the Place d 'Indépendance. The local airport is served from the capital N'Djamena and is also an air force base of the ANT. The symbol of Abéché and symbol of the Ouaddai region's insistence on a special position within Chad was the "Porte d 'Abéché", the old city and palace gate, which was mentioned in Gustav Nachtigal's travel reports . Despite massive protests by the population, this was torn down within one day under armed guard, probably also to show the traditionally troubled region who is in power in the country, but officially to make room for the construction of new roads. In 2008, during the EUFOR Tchad / RCA mission, the "Camp des Etoiles" was built on the northern edge of the city as the "Forward Headquarters" (FHQ) of the European troops. After the end of the EU mandate in 2009, it was handed over to the UN and has served the UN since then. MINURCAT troops as headquarters.

population

The city of Abéché has more than 80,000 inhabitants. The Université Adam Barka d'Abéché stated the population in 2018 as “between 50,000 and 249,999”.

history

French post in Abeche around 1918

Abéché has been a center and hub of the slave trade and other trading activities between the Niger Delta and North Africa for 300 years since the 16th century , as well as one of the important settlements of the Sultanate (Kingdom) of Ouaddai / Wadai. At the end of the 19th century, the wells dried up in the actual capital Ouara , which is why the Sultan Abéché declared Wadai the new capital of his kingdom . The city retained this status until it was finally captured by French colonial troops in 1912, since then Abéché has been the capital of the Ouaddai / Wadai region.

In November 2006 the city was occupied by the Union des forces pour la démocratie , a rebel group aiming to overthrow President Idriss Déby . The city was ransacked for one night. The next day the government army retook the place.
