Abbondio Bernasconi (born August 7, 1757 in Riva San Vitale ; † September 2, 1822 ibid) was a Swiss politician.

Life

Abbondio Bernasconi was the son of Manfredo Bernasconi, lawyer and politician and his wife Maria Antonia (née Fossati).

He studied law at the University of Pavia , but dropped out prematurely and finished it without a degree. After 1775 he worked as a lawyer and notary and belonged to a well-known group of patriots in Riva San Vitale.

In 1781 he was appointed Chancellor of the Pieve of Riva San Vitale.

During the French Revolution on February 15, 1798, the attempt to join the Bailiwick of Lugano to the Cisalpine Republic failed , whereupon all the communities of the Pieve of Riva San Vitale, which belonged to the Bailiwick of Lugano, merged to form the Republic of Riva February 1798 to March 16, 1798. During this time he was posted as secretary and representative of the people from Riva to Milan to negotiate the connection to the Cisalpine Republic. After the end of the Republic of Riva San Vitale, he withdrew into private life, but shortly afterwards took part in political life again as a member of the municipal council and the civil parish of his home town.

He sympathized with the opposition to the cantonal constitution presented by the Congress of Vienna and was fined for it by the federal commissioner Hans Jakob Hirzel.

In 1803 the canton of Ticino was founded and all Ticino municipalities, including Riva San Vitale, became a part of it.

Abbondio Bernasconi was married to Giovanna Alfieri. The names of her children are known:
