Abdallah ag Oumbadougou (* around 1962 in Tchimoumouneme near Ingall ; † January 4, 2020 in Agadez ) was a Nigerian musician (guitar, vocals). He was a member of the Tuareg and fought as an activist for the rights of his people. He is considered one of the fathers of the "Tuareg blues", which combines rock and blues with traditional Tuareg music.

biography

As a teenager, Abdallah ag Oumbadougou taught himself to play the guitar. The famine of the 1970s and 1980s caused many young Tuaregs to look for work in neighboring countries. Abdallah ag Oumbadougou tried his luck in Algeria in 1984 and later in Libya . In the evenings he played music for his friends. In 1987 he founded his first music group Takrist n'Akal ("building the country") in Libya.

He was jailed several times in his home country. He received paramilitary training in Libya. He joined the rebels during the Tuareg uprisings in the first half of the 1990s . His music was banned, but it spread underground.

In 1995 there were peace agreements in Niger. Abdallah ag Oumbadougou officially returned to his homeland. In 1996 he founded the group Oyiwan, which contributed music to the film Imûhar ', une légende by Jacques Dubuisson (1997).

In 2005 Abdallah ag Oumbadougou founded the music collective Desert Rebel with others. In the same year, the film documentary Ishumars, les rockeurs oubliés du désert ("the forgotten rockers of the desert") by François Bergeron about the Tuareg rebellion and the emergence of the Tuareg blues.

Abdallah ag Oumbadougou died in 2020 as a result of a long illness.
