Sharif Abdelhamid Sharaf (alternative name: Sharif ʿAbd al-Hamid Sharaf; Arabic عبد الحميد شرف; * July 8, 1939 in Baghdad , Iraq ; † July 3, 1980 in Amman , Jordan ) was a Jordanian politician who was Prime Minister of Jordan between 1979 and 1980 .

Life

Sharaf was the son of Sharif Sharaf ibn Rajih Al Fawwaz , who was ruler for the then minor king of Iraq Faisal II from April 1 to June 1, 1941 . He grew up with his father in exile in Iran and later in southern Rhodesia until 1944 and most recently in Jordan. In 1959 he began studying philosophy and international law at the American University of Beirut (AUB), which he completed in 1962 with a Master of Arts (MA). He was then head of the Department of International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director General of Radio Jordan and most recently assistant to the Chief of the Royal Court.

In 1965 through Sharaf in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Wasfi al-Tal the office of Minister of Information and held this until 1967. He then became ambassador to the USA in 1967 and remained in this post until 1972. At the same time, he was also accredited as ambassador to Canada between 1969 and 1972 in personal union . From 1972 to 1976 he was the Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations in New York City . After his return he became head of the royal court himself in 1976 and held this position as one of the closest advisers to King Hussein I until 1979.

On December 19, 1979, Sharaf succeeded Mudar Badran himself as Prime Minister and held the office until his unexpected death from a myocardial infarction on July 3, 1980, whereupon Kassim al-Rimawi became his successor. In his cabinet from December 1979 to July 1980 he also held the office of Defense Minister and Foreign Minister.
