Abengourou is a city in the east of the Ivory Coast with 135,635 inhabitants (2014 census). It is located in the tropical rainforest on the road from Abidjan to Ghana and is an important trading center for the region, which is heavily dependent on the plantation economy .
The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Abengourou and the chief of the Agni , who is also the head of the Kingdom of Indénié , founded in the 18th century . His palace , built in 1882 according to the traditional construction method, is adorned with Indénic relics and tapestries .
In Abengourou there is a hospital , several schools , an agricultural vocational school and a research station for growing coffee and cocoa in public buildings . These two most important commercial goods in the region are transported for export to the capital Abidjan, 160 kilometers away.
Personalities
The diplomat Kacou Houadja Léon Adom (* 1950) and the soccer player Roger Assalé (* 1993) were born in Abengourou .
