Catch trench near Aschheim

The interception ditch is an artificially created watercourse that leads from the extreme northeast of Munich to the reservoir and whose water is directed at the Neufinsing power plant into the Middle Isar Canal . The water of the Hachinger Bach , which begins south of Munich, is led over the Hüllgraben through northeast Munich into the interception ditch, so that it finally flows into the Isar at Moosburg via the Middle Isar Canal .

Trench head

The interception ditch begins in the Johanneskirchen district of Munich in the district 13 Bogenhausen with the so-called trench head, an inlet structure in which the water from the enveloping ditch that ends here falls several meters deep into an approximately 670 m long and initially approximately 90 m wide compensation basin. This basin in the shape of a long acute angle is only 15 m wide at its other end and is closed by an earth dam against the actual interception ditch, which in turn is lower and is connected to the basin by another inlet structure.

The catchment ditch, which is around 15 wide and initially 8 meters below the level of the surrounding area, is located between steep embankments and flows in a north-easterly direction through the Johanneskirchener Moos , crossing under the B 471 Ismaninger Strasse and the A 99 ring road in Aschheim and flowing in the area of the municipality of Kirchheim near Munich north past the place up to the Speicherseestrasse in the district Landsham-Moos of the municipality Pliening . There the interception ditch turns to the north until it flows through an outlet structure about 150 m in front of the reservoir and then flows into the canal, which runs at a lower level next to the Mittlere-Isar canal to drain the fish ponds at the reservoir and at The Neufinsing power station will be fed back into the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal. The interception ditch, including the compensation basin, is approx. 9 km long.

The interception ditch was built at right angles to the direction of the groundwater flow between 1920 and 1929 at the same time as the Mittlere-Isar Canal to regulate the groundwater level in the Johanneskirchner Moos. The interception ditch is fed not only by the enveloping ditch but also by numerous springs. It has excellent water quality and is always crystal clear as it never floods. Its water is constantly cold. In summer, various aquatic plants grow on it over a large area. The Isarfischer association has leased the fishing rights .

The catchment ditch is a third-order body of water . At least in the area of the state capital Munich, it is protected as part of the landscape in accordance with the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act.
