The Abra ( eng .: Abra River ) is a river in the province of Abra in the Philippines . It rises in the mountains of the Cordillera Central near the 2187 m high Mount Data , in the province of Benguet . The Agno and Rio Chico rivers have their sources just a few kilometers away . The river empties into the South China Sea near Caoayan Township . The Abra has a length of 181 km and a water catchment area of 5125 km².
From its source in the municipality of Mankayan , the Abra flows north in a wide river valley, crosses the province of Ilocos Sur and reaches the Bangued plain in the province of Abra . Here it unites with its most important tributary, the Tineg. At its confluence, the Abra changes its direction of flow from north to south-west and strives towards the South China Sea. The Abra river valley is considered to be extremely wide and has numerous meanders . To the southeast of Vigan City , its mouth lies in the area of the municipality of Caoayan .
The Tirad Pass National Park and the Cassamata Hill National Park lie along the course of the river .
