history

The name Bangued means "road blocks, obstacles". Bangued became an independent municipality in 1598 and became the seat of the provincial government of the province of Abra on July 25, 1861.

The early settlers were ethnic Tingguian who belonged to the tribes of the Bago , Itneg , Masadjit , Ibanao, and Indayas . The Tingguian resisted Christianization by Spanish monks who came to the western settlements. The inhabitants of the Tingguiangebiets prevented the Spaniards to it in their area to penetrate, by setting up roadblocks on all the roads of the area and by felled large trees they in the river Abra threw to the invading colonizers to prevent in boats and bamboo rafts in the area to penetrate . These obstacles were called "fear" in the language of the locals.

Under the leadership of Juan de Salcedo , the Spanish conquistadors decided to invade the area. As they advanced eastward into the area, they saw the tree trunks along the Abra River and the large stones blocking the paths. A subordinate Salcedos met a local and asked for the name of the place, who thought he was being asked about the meaning of the stones and the tree trunks and answered with the word "fear", which the subordinate Salcedos wrote down in his notebook.

The Spaniards were successful in their efforts to penetrate the inland communities by removing the obstacles with the words "Abra ese obstucus". Later, the place where they found the obstacles turned into fear and the province they named Abra.

As a result of the American colonization, a civil government was established and the name was changed to Bangued.

The municipality's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, followed by trade and industry. The trade and assembly is dominated by Chinese business people. Economic activity is limited to the main town along the main roads.
