Life

Abraham Cooper was born the son of a tobacconist and innkeeper on Red Lion Street, London. His family first lived in Holloway and later moved to Edmonton . At age 13, Cooper joined Astley ’s Circus. Hippodramas were often performed there, which influenced Cooper's artistic development. He was interested in painting at an early age and found his inspiration in circus events.

At the age of 22 he became a student of Benjamin Marshall . Like him, he painted numerous portraits of racehorses that were published in The Sporting Magazine . One of the most famous is the Portrait of Ellis (1836).

In 1812 Cooper exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy of Arts , seven years later he became a member (RA) there. He mainly worked with oil paints , sometimes he also painted watercolors . He usually signed the works with his monogram .

In 1813, Cooper painted the first picture for the Duke of Portland , who became one of its main patrons. In 1829 he created the very successful work Die Jagdgesellschaft , the motif of which he later took up again and again. His patrons included many other influential figures such as Queen Adelaide and Queen Victoria . Cooper's works were already selling very well during his lifetime, so that he was able to maintain a comfortable standard of living.

Cooper was married to Mrs. Francis D'Ebro. They had two sons: Alexander Davis Cooper (* 1820, later also worked as a painter) and Alfred William Cooper. Cooper also had a stepson.

Well-known students of Cooper were, for example, John Frederick Herring senior , Thomas Woodward and William Barraud, in whose work his influence is strongly reflected.
