Abraham Janssens , (* 1567 or 1573 - 1575 in Antwerp ; † before January 25, 1632 there ) was a Flemish painter. To distinguish himself from other painters of the same name, he called himself Abraham Janssens van Nuyssen.

Life

Abraham Janssens became a pupil of Jan Snellinck in 1585 . From 1598 to 1601 he visited Rome , where he appropriated some stylistic elements of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and the classical inspiration of his late work. Back in Antwerp, he joined the Guild of Luke in 1601 and from 1606 headed the Antwerp painters' guild. His best works depict historical scenes, but he also created portraits and religious images. In his religious pictures, among which the Entombment of Christ and the Adoration of the Magi are the most important, he shows himself to be a forerunner of Peter Paul Rubens in terms of color and size of conception , as well as in individual allegories , while his mythological paintings are colder and paler are in the tone. With age, however, his ability deteriorated and he was overtaken by Antwerp's Peter Paul Rubens.
