The Abraham Lincoln Passenger Car is the oldest operational passenger car in the United States of America . The Abraham Lincoln was listed on June 16, 1988 under the number 88000740 on the National Register of Historic Places .
history
In September 1910, the 895 passenger car was sold to the Western Pacific Railroad by the Pullman Palace Car Company for $ 13,624.50 . On January 11, 1924, the vehicle was set under number 926 in the fleet of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad . The book value was $ 8,783.90. In 1929 the car was re-numbered to 101 and converted for use by the President of the Railway Company . A state room, office, bathroom, viewing room, kitchen, dining room and porter department were built in. At the same time, the car received new bogies with six wheels each , the new weight was given as 190,000 pounds (about 41.9 tons). The conversion cost $ 33,294.22. The car was sold to Golden West Rail Tours in September 1964 for $ 3,250. The book value was still US $ 47,659.60.
Construction
Contrary to common practice, the passenger car was made of riveted steel and the running gear was made of cast iron . The length of the car was around 24.4 meters (80 feet). Another innovation was the installation of electrical lighting. For this, electrical lines, switches, control panels, generators and accumulators had to be installed. The voltage chosen was 32 volts DC. The seating capacity was 84 seats. The interior was made of handcrafted walnut wood with bronze fittings.
Decommissioning and restoration
In 1983 the car was bought by Curtis Andrews. Abraham Lincoln was in a period of eight months, Tucson , Arizona repaired and to operate on Amtrak - routes certified. Among other things, the bogies from 1929 were replaced by newer ones from 1945 and the braking system was renewed. The technical investigation report was 45 pages long.
After the repairs were completed, the car was taken to Spokane , Washington state on Amtrak routes . The remainder of the route to its final location in Othello was via branch lines. Instead of giving the Pullman car a new number, the name of the US President Abraham Lincoln was chosen, even though the car had never served as a means of transport for Abraham Lincoln, who had died 45 years before the car was put into service. The name was only given to honor the president.
