On his father's side, Abraham Muhl came from a German merchant family who immigrated to Danzig in 1717. The father Friedrich Muhl was a wealthy businessman and councilor, the mother Johanna Florentine was the daughter of the Polish priest and author Paul Świetlicki (Schwidlitzki). Abraham Muhl attended a business school in Hamburg , where his ancestors lived, from 1782 to 1788 and then worked in his father's company in Danzig.

After his death in 1797 he took over the company and became one of the most influential personalities in the city. In 1799 he took part in a group of shareholders around Jacob Kabrun , which financed the construction of the new theater on the Kohlenmarkt .

In 1808 Muhl became a senator in Danzig after it became a free city under French rule. That year he was a member of the delegation in Hamburg that negotiated the city's reparation payments to Napoleon.

Abraham Muhl traded mainly in grain and wine. He owned two merchant ships as well as some houses and goods in and around Gdansk. In 1813, a considerable part of its holdings on the Speicherinsel burned up due to acts of war.

Abraham Muhl took over a large part of the French claims for compensation from Danzig. After the city came back under Prussian sovereignty in 1814, he became a member of the Prussian Chamber of Commerce.

In 1819 the trading company AL Muhl & Co. went bankrupt. The philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer , his mother Johanna and other believers lost a considerable part of their invested fortune.
