John Muhl

John Muhl (born June 18, 1879 at Gut Lagschau near Klein Trampken , Danziger Höhe district ; † February 2, 1943 in Danzig ) was a German public prosecutor and police officer. He was the authoritative national historian of Gdansk and its surroundings.

Life

Muhl came from a Danzig patrician family who immigrated from Hamburg in 1711. His parents were the manor owner Adolf Muhl and his wife Elisabeth born. Slate.

After graduating from the Academic Gymnasium Gdansk , he began to study law at the University of Jena . In 1900 he was in the Corps Thuringia Jena recipiert . When he was inactive , he moved to the Friedrichs University in Halle . After the legal traineeship (1903) he was at the district court in Putzig . In 1907 he passed the great state examination in law. Then he was assessor at the court and public prosecutor's office in Danzig , Konitz and Elbing . He was appointed public prosecutor in Gdansk in 1914. He spent the First World War on the Romanian theater of war . Then he was temporarily involved in the German National People's Party . In Langfuhr he was its chairman. From 1919 he worked part-time in the provincial administration, from 1921 as deputy state councilor. In the Free City of Danzig he was promoted to First Public Prosecutor on July 1, 1924, and in October 1924 he was entrusted with the management of the state criminal police. On July 1, 1926, he was appointed its director. From 1935 to 1943 he was chairman of the Society for Family Research, Coat of Arms and Seal Studies in Gdansk and editor of the genealogical journal Danziger Familiengeschichtliche Posts . He died at the age of 64.

In 2016, the museum in the former Stutthof concentration camp published an annotated and illustrated complete translation of Muhl's book Geschichte von Stutthof (1928). In contrast to the original edition, it has been supplemented by a comprehensive bibliography and an extensive list of names.
