life and work
The exact dates of life of Abraham von der Hecken are not known. His father, Samuel van den Hecken (around 1595 – after 1637), was also a painter and his teacher. The sister Magdalena van der Hecken (life dates unknown) created several flower still lifes as a painter. Abraham van den Hecken grew up in Antwerp and moved to Amsterdam as a young man, where he married Catharina Lundens, the sister of the painter Gerrit Lundens , in 1635 . Abraham van den Hecken lived in Amsterdam until 1645, stayed in The Hague in 1647, then returned to Amsterdam and visited London in 1652. Subsequently, his stay in The Hague from 1653–1655 is documented; later his track is lost.
Van der Hecken initially created genre pictures depicting rural life. He then turned to religious motifs, but also created portraits of scientists and commissioned portraits. A landscape picture with hunting dogs by the painter is also known.
