The Scharnhorst substation , also known as the Scharnhorst substation , is a former substation belonging to the former Berlin electricity supplier Bewag . The listed building in Berlin-Wedding has served as the sales and customer center of today's Berlin electricity supplier Vattenfall since 2006 .

The construction was used by Bewag until 1984 to transform the electrical energy supplied to Berlin via overhead lines with an electrical voltage of 30  kV to the lower voltage of 6 kV for urban distribution in the regional main distribution network. The light control room , from which the Berlin street lighting was monitored and controlled, was located in the attic . The necessary switching equipment with busbars and oil switches were arranged around two inner atriums, the power transformers were housed in transformer chambers in front of them. The substation shows elements of brick expressionism and the Brandenburg brick Gothic. As a result of a renovation in 2005/2006, the interior of the building was almost completely rebuilt.

history

The plant was built in 1928 according to plans by Hans Heinrich Müller , who was Bewag's house architect at the time. The building was created in the implementation of the municipal power distribution concept from 1924. It was named after the Prussian general Gerhard von Scharnhorst , whose grave is in the nearby Invalidenfriedhof .

Bewag shut down the plant in 1984 and finally shut it down in 1992.

After several years of failing to use the building for another purpose, Bewag decided to use it again. Bewag originally planned to build a hotel here, but could not find an investor. According to plans by the architects Petra Kahlfeldt and Paul Kahlfeldt , she had the building converted into a service and customer center. Bewag sold the building to a real estate investor who was renovating the house and signed a long-term lease with them. The renovation cost a total of 40 million euros.

architecture

The substation, typical of brick expressionism, was built as a steel frame construction with a brick facade.

The building is located at Sellerstraße 16–26 at Berlin's Nordhafen . The representative western front facade, which is structured by several triangular wall pillars, is oriented in this direction. The rear east facade is also characterized by protruding components: Here, transformers were found in the chambers in front of the facade. The south and north facades are smooth and have windows behind which there were accounting offices and staff rooms. The stairwells are located at the corners of the building and can be recognized from the outside by the larger distance between the windows.

Inside the building there are two smaller atriums. These were used for ventilation and smoke extraction from the technical equipment and have been covered atriums since the renovation .

The control room was located on the upper floor of the building, where it was illuminated by a skylight.

Before the renovation in 2005/2006, the building had a total of 16 different levels. For example, there were so-called cable floors, in which there were only cables and technical equipment and which were accordingly low. During the renovation, the interior of the substation was largely demolished and the former 16 levels have now been replaced by 7 floors. Windows and stairs have been adapted to the new floors.
