The former chapter house used as a monastery church

The Abbey of Saint-Thierry was a Benedictine monastery from 974 to 1695 and has been a monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Saint Bathilde in Saint-Thierry in the Marne department ( Archdiocese of Reims ) in France since 1968 . The monastery buildings have been classified as Monument historique since 1926 .

history

Theodoric von Reims , student of Remigius von Reims , founded the monastery of Saint Bartholomew (after the apostle Bartholomäus ) around 500 northwest of Reims on the Mont d'Hor . In 974, Archbishop Adalbero of Reims settled the monastery with Benedictines and gave them the relics of Theodoric (French: Thierry ), so that over time it took the name of Saint-Thierry . The most famous abbot was the later Cistercian Wilhelm von Saint-Thierry from 1121 to 1135 .

From 1627 the monastery belonged to the masons . In 1696 it was dissolved and converted into a second residence for the archbishop. The monks went to Reims, but some came back later and were finally expelled in 1777. The monastery was destroyed by the French Revolution (except for the chapter house from the 12th century that still exists today).

In 1968 there was resettlement by the Benedictine Sisters of Saint Bathilde (also: Benedictine Sisters of Vanves ) founded by Marguerite Waddington-Delmas . Today 23 sisters live there.
