Entrance to the "academixer basement" in Leipzig (2009)

The academixer are a Leipzig cabaret that has existed since 1966 and has since changed from a student to a well-known professional cabaret.

history

The cabaret academixer has been located in the cellar of the former Dresdner Hof exhibition center on Kupfergasse since 1980 .

The academixer was founded on September 10, 1966 as a student cabaret at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig, hence the name derived from 'academic'. The founding members Christian Becher , Gunter Böhnke , Jürgen Hart and Bernd-Lutz Lange stood on the stage as an ensemble for many years and also shaped the academixer's game behind the scenes. This was part of the job for a good ten years, and it wasn't until the mid-1970s that academixers advanced to professional cabaret.

Jürgen Hart became the head of the cabaret and remained so until 1990. His death on April 9, 2002 marked a deep turning point. He had written nearly 40 programs since 1966 and directed most of them. In addition to his work at the academix, he became known to a large audience primarily through his song “Sing, mei Sachse, sing”.

The ensemble continues to perform the typical academixer cabaret play, transposed to the present day. In addition to current political issues, Saxon dialect programs, literary-musical and satirical plays are brought to the stage. The range on offer ranges from relaxed, cheerful to bitterly angry, black-humored programs. The academixer basement serves as a venue for the in-house ensemble, but there are also regular guest appearances by other artists and cabarets. The premises are also used intensively for the annual salmon fair that has been held since 1991 . Well-known artists such as Georg Schramm , Jochen Malmsheimer , Mathias Tretter , Tom Pauls , Bernd-Lutz Lange , Philipp Weber , Caresses with Friends , Simone Solga or Katrin Weber performed here.

In 1980 the ensemble got its own venue in downtown Leipzig. The new domicile was found in the basement of the “Dresdner Hof” exhibition building, built by Leopold Stentzler in 1912/13 at Neumarkt 21 / corner of Kupfergasse, one of those exhibition palaces that shaped the cityscape at the time. The design of the subterranean rooms, however, dates back to 1928. A unique and elegant reception hall in Art Deco style with information desks, workstations for interpreters and a cloakroom was created in the basement of the Dresdner Hof based on designs by Walter Gruner , Conference and dictation rooms, writing and reading rooms, a refreshment room with a bar, hairdressing rooms for men and women, bathrooms and medical rooms with a nurse.

Most of the lobby still has its original furnishings. Many details of the former interior, such as the gold-plated and silver-plated ceilings and the ceiling lights, have been preserved. Also noteworthy are the pillars covered with mirrored, hand-blown glass mosaic in today's theater hall.

When it was converted into a venue in 1980, the reception lobby was supplemented by original Bauhaus chairs (designed by Marcel Breuer ), which fit perfectly into the design of the room. The cabaret has space for around 250 spectators. The academixer basement also has a restaurant - the "Mixer".

Some original pieces from the reception hall have also found their place in the restaurant. This includes a former telephone and postal service counter, parts of the wooden walls and individual signs and murals.

After the exhibition in downtown Leipzig was closed in 1993, the exhibition center was converted into a senior citizens' residence in 1998. The academixer basement was also renovated. The cabaret performed in an interim venue during this time. From June 9th, 2000, they played again in the old basement, which was renovated in accordance with monument regulations. The artistic design of the interior designed by the architect Walter Gruner was in the hands of Curt Metze, who today may only be known to experts, but has left his mark in many places in the city. Among other things, he designed a window in the Reconciliation Church in Gohlis and the plaster inlay in the Ring-Café (Leipzig) . During a renovation in 2012, while cleaning the wood paneling on the walls, older paintings were discovered, which in all probability are the original paintings by Curt Metzes based on the designs of Walter Gruner. Both signatures were discovered during the professional uncovering and the paintings were restored according to today's conservation principles.
