Life

The son of a yarn factory worker and a curtain seamstress was already involved in church amateur plays in his youth. After graduating from high school, he studied economics at the Leipzig Commercial College .

As a student he founded his first, albeit short-lived, cabaret. In addition, Becher played on the student stage of what was then Karl Marx University . There he met Jürgen Hart , Bernd-Lutz Lange and Gunter Böhnke , and in 1966 he joined the student cabaret " academixer " they founded . Even after the conversion of the student cabaret into a professional theater in 1977, Becher remained a member. In 1997 he designed his first solo program with “game over”. Becher was not only active as a cabaret artist, but also as a director both in-house and at other cabarets and theaters. From 2001 to 2006 he was the artistic director of Academixer.

His tombstone, designed by the Leipzig sculptor Klaus Schwabe , is on the Leipzig South Cemetery

In 2010 he received the “Leipziger Löwenzahn” laugh fair festival prize for his life's work.

In addition to his work as a cabaret artist, Becher continued to work as an actor and director for the university's student theater (Poetisches Theater) until 1989. In 1977 he staged a Ringelnatz evening in the Beyerhaus, his first own program, which was re-enacted on many GDR stages. Above all, he staged plays from the absurd theater that was frowned upon in the GDR , such as " Waiting for Godot " by Samuel Beckett , "The woman to throw away " by Dario Fo or " We got away again " by Thornton Wilder .

Christian Becher, who was last seriously ill, died on January 24, 2013 in Leipzig as a result of an infection. He was buried in the Leipzig South Cemetery in the neighborhood of Jürgen Hart and Lene Voigt .
