The Achilles doctor fish ( Acanthurus achilles ) or orange doctor fish is a species from the family of doctor fish (Acanthuridae) and belongs to the subfamily of scalpel doctor fish (Acanthurinae) .
distribution
They live in the Pacific , from the Torres Strait to the Marquesas and from the Carolines to Hawaii in turbulent shallow water regions up to ten meters deep.
behavior
The Achilles surgeonfish live individually or in pairs, only in Polynesia also in schools.
Aquarium keeping
Despite its magnificent appearance, the Achilles doctor fish is not recommended as an aquarium inhabitant. Imported animals are often weakened, infested with parasites and prone to disease. The fish has a pronounced need to swim, so it needs a very large tank and, through restless swimming, brings a lot of restlessness to the fish community kept in the aquarium. It is also incompatible with other Acanthurus species. Nevertheless, it is sometimes offered in the ornamental fish trade.
