Achilles sport

Achilles-Sport, built in 1955

The Achilles sport was advertised as a scooter , the frame type ago, however, a fully enclosed motorcycle Achilles works, Weikert & Co. K. G., in Wilhelmshaven Langewerth . The manufacturer was the West German successor company of the Czechoslovak or Bohemian Achilles bicycle and motor vehicle factory , which was already producing motorcycles in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire before the First World War. The vehicle was based on a Swiss design that had been manufactured under the name "Ami-Roller" in an edition of a maximum of 1000 pieces. The Achilles sport was produced around 3000 times between 1953 and the end of the company in 1957.

Construction features of the body

frame

The tubular steel frame of the Achilles-Sport is closed like a motorcycle, with the upper frame tube - adapted to the curve of the fairing - extending to the end of the vehicle. The small front wheel (rim size 10 ″) is guided by a telescopic fork specially designed for this size with adjustable handlebars. The rear wheel is mounted in a rocker arm, a so-called “weighing frame”, which is held in the main frame by two transverse “torsion springs” (rubber discs). These springs are located in the pivot point of the swing arm. When heavily loaded, the swing arm is supported by a strut firmly attached to it against a "rubber pin" under the driver's seat or against the frame.

To enable quick wheel and tire changes, both wheels have quick-release axles; the wheel disks consist of two halves screwed together. The chain can remain in the chain case when removing the rear wheel. Despite the encapsulation, the chain is not maintenance-free. It must be lubricated with engine oil after every 1000 km. After 3000 km it is to be removed according to the operating instructions, washed out with petrol or kerosene and then immersed in "warmed chain grease".

Disguise

The fairing of the Achilles-Sport encloses all mechanical parts. At the front, however, it has a funnel-shaped opening to supply the engine with cooling air, which exits through the decorative grille on the side in front of the rear wheel and back so that no heat builds up. A fan like other scooters is not required. Minor maintenance work on the engine and battery is relatively easy to carry out thanks to the large side flaps in the cladding panels. Sheets raised at the front protect the driver's legs from dirt from the road; Large footboards on the left and right should enable a relaxed position of the feet. On the other hand, the overall small dimensions of the vehicle lead to a rather unfavorable seating position for the driver.

The original colors of the scooter are black, red and old gold metallic.

engine and gears

The Achilles-Sport has a 1-cylinder two-stroke engine from Fichtel & Sachs (optionally 150 cm³ or 175 cm³), which is centrally installed like a motorcycle. The cylinder is made of gray cast iron , the cylinder cover and motor housing are made of light metal. In the housing are the crankshaft , the gearbox with starter device ( kick starter ) and the clutch as well as the alternator with flywheel.

The power is transmitted via a motor-gear chain from the crankshaft to the clutch or gearbox and via the drive chain to the rear wheel. The Achilles foot switch (on the left) and an idle selector lever on the handlebars come as standard. A manual transmission was also available on request.
