Achilles Augustus von Lersner
Achilles Augustus von Lersner (born April 29, 1662 in Frankfurt am Main ; † December 29, 1732 there ) was a Frankfurt patrician and chronicler .
family
The Lersners family came from Felsberg in Niederhessen, where they can be traced back to the 14th century. Her descendants lived in Marburg as civil servants or scholars . Hermann Lersner , Professor of Law in Marburg, married the Frankfurt patrician daughter Elisabeth Rauscher in 1566, which made him heir to the Alten Limpurg patrician society . His descendants became citizens of Frankfurt.
Achilles Augustus of Lersner was on April 29, 1662 one of eleven children of the 1681 ennobled city mayor Heinrich Ludwig von Lersner born and his wife Maria Antoinette Löffler and from Neidingen. In 1696 he married Anna Rosina Steffan von Cronstetten , who died soon after. In 1699 he married Anna Sibylla Ochs von Ochsenstein . Of his nine children, only the son Georg August von Lersner, born in 1701, survived . Achilles Augustus von Lersner died on December 29, 1732 in his hometown.
Life
From 1681 he attended grammar school in Durlach. From July 3, 1682 he studied law at the University of Tübingen , from April 28, 1684 at the University of Gießen and from July 12, 1687 at the University of Basel . He then traveled to Geneva, Augsburg (1689), the Netherlands and Saxony. In 1715 he became councilor (senator), in 1721 junior mayor and in 1722 aldermen. In 1727, 1728 and 1730 he was elected to the office of Senior Mayor .
Meaning and work
Lersner's important work is the Chronik von Frankfurt ( The widely-famous Freyen Reichs-, Wahl- und Handels-Stadt Franckfurt am Mayn Chronica ) , first published in 1706 , a folio volume of 180 sheets. The second volume of the chronicle appeared in 1734; it was published posthumously by his son Georg August. A third volume was in preparation but was never published. The handwritten draft by Georg August is now in the possession of the Institute for City History.
In contrast to the oldest Frankfurt chronicles from the 16th century, which were written by clergymen based on traditions or their own records, Lersner had official sources available in addition to such records. The extensive chronicle contains some inaccuracies, since Lersner dealt with his sources uncritically from today's perspective . On the other hand, certificates and documents were apparently available to him that have since been lost, so that the chronicle itself is an important source for today's historiography.
