CI Acid Violet 9 is an acid dye from the group of xanthene and triphenylmethane dyes . It is a light-sensitive, acid-labile chemical compound that dissolves in water with a purple color.

Manufacturing

Acid Violet 9 ( 5 ) is synthesized by reacting phthalic anhydride ( 1 ) with resorcinol ( 2 ) in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride to give dichlorofluoroanlactone ( 3 ). The reaction of this intermediate stage with o -toluidine ( 4 ) at 220 ° C in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride and subsequent sulfonation with sulfuric acid (monohydrate) at 20 ° C gives the end product:

Acid Violet 9 was used as a stamping ink for food and food packaging, as well as for coloring and painting eggshells. Acid Violet 9 is no longer approved for this use since the implementation of EU Directive 94/36 / EC through the Additive Approval Ordinance (ZZulV).
