The Russian sturgeon ( Acipenser gueldenstaedtii ), Ossietra sturgeon or Waxdick is an endangered species of sturgeon . It was named after the German-Baltic natural scientist Johann Anton Güldenstädt . For the Russian fishing industry it is an important supplier of caviar .
features
The Russian sturgeon grows up to 2.35 meters long and weighs more than a hundred kilograms. Subfossil remains from the Black Sea were three meters long.
distribution
This is again divided into three subspecies, which differ only because of their geographical location. In the Black Sea and Sea of Azov and the tributaries of the Danube to Don, the Pontic Waxdick ( A. g. Colchicus ) occurs. The North Caspian Waxdick ( A. g. Gueldenstaedti ) lives in the northern part of the Caspian Sea, the South Caspian Waxdick ( A. g. Persicus ) in the southern Caspian Sea and its catchment area.
Diseases
Like the white sturgeon ( A. transmontanus ), the Russian sturgeon is parasitized by the White sturgeon epivirus (outdated: White Sturgeon Iridovirus , WSIV).
