The ACOnet ( A ustrian A cademic Co mputer Net work ) is a high-performance network for science and research and research-related facilities in Austria , the computer science from the Central Service of the 1992 University of Vienna is operated.

history

The association was founded in 1986, and in 1990 the University of Vienna was connected to the Internet for the first time. In the second half of 1990, a joint, multi-vendor communications infrastructure for the ACOnet is built in which the ACOnet the first stage of a private X.25 is the network, the universities in Vienna , Graz , Leoben , Klagenfurt , Innsbruck , Salzburg and Linz each other connects in a ring .

In 1992, the conversion from an X.25 computer network to an Internet Protocol computer network followed, the core of which consisted of a backbone triangle with locations in Vienna, Graz and Linz. Other universities were connected to these nodes in order to gain access to the ACOnet.

However, the increasing demand for bandwidth caused the ACOnet to switch to a Metropolitan Area Network in 1994 and to an ATM backbone in 1996 .

Establishment and duties

The ACOnet connects universities and research institutions on the Internet. The network is operated on a wavelength-transparent fiber optic backbone by the Central IT Service of the University of Vienna . The DWDM technology used enables several transmission channels per route that can be operated at 10 or 100 Gbit / s. Connection points are in Vienna, Linz , Salzburg , Innsbruck , Dornbirn , Klagenfurt , Leoben , Graz and Eisenstadt . In 2009 connection options were also added in St. Pölten and Krems an der Donau .

On March 11, 2011, IPv6 was transferred from pilot operation to regular operation and has been offered as a standard product since 2011.
