Action is an international non-food - discounters . The group is now represented in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Austria and Poland, operates over 1,500 branches across Europe and employs over 50,000 people (as of 2020).

history

The first Action store opened in Enkhuizen in July 1993 , and shortly afterwards additional branches in Heerhugowaard and Wognum . At the end of 1994, Action had eight stores. The number of branches rose to 94 by the end of 2002. In 2004, the first store in the supermarket concept was opened, with shopping trolleys and counter furniture with a treadmill. Existing shops were also converted to the new concept at this time.

In 2005 Action opened the first branch in Flanders, in 2009 the first branch in Germany, and in July 2010 the second branch followed. The first branch opened in Courrières (France) in December 2012, followed by Austria and Luxembourg in 2015, and Poland in 2017.

The first distribution centers outside the Netherlands were opened in Moissy-Cramayel in 2016 and in Biblis in 2016 . The country office for Germany is based in Düsseldorf.

At the end of 2016 there were 830 branches, and in autumn 2017 the 1,000th branch opened.

Ownership

The British private equity company 3i Group took over the company together with a group of institutional investors for € 130 million from the founding family in 2011 and has accompanied the international expansion since then. As part of a restructuring of the ownership structure, the 3i Group took over further shares in 2019 and now owns around 80% of the company. As part of the restructuring, the company was valued at € 10.3 billion. The most important (and probably most successful) participation of the 3i Group represents 60% of the investor's company value.

The range consists of 13 categories: Decoration, Home Improvement, Toys & Entertainment, Office & Hobby, Multimedia, Household Goods, Garden & Outdoor, Washing & Cleaning, Food & Drink, Personal Care, Pets, Fashion & Home Textiles. Action offers many top brands and own brands.

Action partly takes over the procedure of special item markets for its range . According to the company, the range consists of over 6000 items. Most of them change constantly, only a third belong to the fixed range. Action introduces more than 150 new items every week.
