Adam Carroll (* 1975 in Tyler , Texas ) is an American musician and singer-songwriter of alternative country / Americana .

Life

Adam Carroll grew up in his hometown Tyler and was initially mainly influenced by classical rock music. First he tried his hand at the electric guitar; But when he switched to acoustic guitar at the age of eighteen, the direction in which he would develop was quickly determined: "The acoustic guitar gave me a feeling that the electric guitar could never give me," he said in an interview “And when I saw Joe Ely , Guy Clark and Robert Earl Keen live, that strengthened me.” He was particularly impressed by Terry Allen's LP Lubbock (On Everything) , Carroll continued. Under this influence he began to write songs, paying particular attention to the interplay of words and music.

Soon he was playing small concerts and thus quickly created an interested audience. Regular tours through Texas and the Southwest of the USA enabled him to make contacts for his debut South of Town , which was produced by Lloyd Maines . The CD brought him his own popularity, his appearance at the following Austiner Festival South by Southwest made him known in the scene. The second album, Looking Out The Screen Door , was also produced by Maines. Carroll continued to appear frequently , opening roles for Charlie Robison , Lucinda Williams , and finally Terry Allen .

Carroll's songs are mostly highly poetic everyday stories that are clearly orchestrated and that are told rather than sung. Sometimes the stories alternate between comedy and nonsense. As influences can be especially Butch Hancock , John Prine and Townes Van Zandt account. The Austin Chronicle discovered "75% John Prine and a quarter of Townes Van Zandt" in Adam Carroll after a concert. Of course, Carroll is far from being as popular as his role models. Music journalist Jim Caligiuri described the Texan troubadour as "probably Austin's best-kept secret".

After a live CD, Far Away Blues was recorded again under the wing of Lloyd Maines . This time a particularly intimate atmosphere was achieved, which was also due to the fact that Carroll briefly introduced each song. During the production, Carroll played the songs in full, with guitar and harmonica, then put Maine's rhythm section, strings and brass on top. Carroll's grandfather Ray Davidson was among the musicians on saxophone. Ray Wylie Hubbard appears as a guest, and Hubbard also co-wrote the song Last Day Of Grace . Maines himself is one of the musicians. The album received numerous positive reviews and earned Carroll several awards at the Austin Music Awards .

Some musicians have recorded songs by Adam Carroll, e.g. B. Slaid Cleaves and The Band of Heathens . Adam Carroll is signed to Down Hole Records .
