Adam Hills (born July 10, 1970 in Sydney ) is an Australian comedian and television presenter .

Comedy

Hills first appeared at the Sydney Comedy Store at the age of 19 . In the mid-1990s, after having worked for breakfast radio for some time, he decided to focus entirely on performing live as a comedian. In 1997 his first solo program Stand up and Deliver premiered. The title of his fourth program, Go You Big Red Fire Engine , was created in 1999 during a performance in Melbourne . Hills asked a man in the audience to shout his name, which the entire audience should repeat out loud. Instead, however, the man shouted: “Go you big red fire engine!” (For example: “Come on, you big red fire engine!”) From this the audience developed a chant , which Hills was so enthusiastic about that he decided to do his next program afterwards to name.

Hills also became known outside of Australia as he performed in Canada, the US and the UK as well. He has been nominated three times for the Scottish Perrier Comedy Award . In his appearances, he often addresses the cultural and dialectal differences between English-speaking countries and imitates their respective accents. Occasionally, however, he also looks at the language and culture of other Europeans, such as Swedes, Dutch and French.

Since one of his shows in Adelaide had deaf people in the audience and he had a sign language interpreter next to him on stage, he has regularly used sign language interpreters in his performances, as he believes this is an entertaining and enriching experience for the hearing audience. Since then, he has also incorporated the peculiarities of sign language into his program.

watch TV

Hills is known in Australia for his music show Spicks and Specks , which he has hosted since its premiere in 2005. He has appeared in a number of other Australian shows as well as on British television such as Mock the Week . Hills, who was himself nominated for the Australian Gold Logie television award, was one of the hosts at the 2007 Logie Award ceremony. In summer 2008 he hosted the broadcast of the Paralympics for ABC . Starting in 2011, he is scheduled to host his own weekly talk show on ABC entitled Adam Hills In Gordon Street Tonight .

Private life

Hills was born without a right foot and therefore wears a prosthesis . After performing as a comedian for over a decade, he began to incorporate that into his programs. In previous years he had held back because he did not want to be known as the "one-legged comedian". At some of the performances he even took off his prosthesis and handed it to the audience for “ stage diving ”.

Hills studied communication at Macquarie University in Sydney and graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts. He has been married to the opera singer Ali McGregor since December 2009. Their daughter Beatrice Pearl was born in 2010.
