Adam Koppy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adam H. Koppy (born April 13, 1973 - June 26, 2013 in Dowagiac , Michigan ) was an American mechanical engineer. He was internationally recognized as one of the leading designers of friction stir welding machines . He was one of the three inventors of a patented adapter for use in friction stir welding, which is suitable for use on a conventional milling machine with a mechanism for adjusting the height of the welding tool along its longitudinal axis.

Education

Adam Koppy studied mechanical engineering and machine design at Kettering University from 1992 to 1997 , where he received his Bachelor of Science (BSME) in mechanical engineering. From 1998 to 2002 he studied mechanical engineering at Western Michigan University , where he specialized in vibration and stress, and where he received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME).

Hess Engineering, Inc.

From June 1992 to November 2001 he worked for 9 ½ years as an engineer at Hess Engineering, Inc. in the construction of direct current flash butt welding machines for car wheels. There he constructed an ultrasonic leak testing machine for car wheels that was able to detect a 50 micrometer leak at a cycle speed of 900 parts / hour.

Motan

From December 2001 to June 2002 he worked as an engineer at Motan. There he constructed pneumatic conveying systems for bulk plastic granulate. It reduced the material costs of a vacuum container by 15% while at the same time reducing assembly costs and improving performance and reliability. This was the company's first project designed with AutoCAD Inventor 3D software. He also worked on system design and hardware specifications for an electrical data bus system that centrally controlled drying and conveying.

Transformation Technologies Inc.

From July 2002 to December 2008, he worked for more than 6½ years as an engineering manager at Transformation Technologies Inc. in South Bend , Indiana . There he was the chief engineer for the design of friction stir welding machines for aerospace and research. His concepts for simple, robust and inexpensive construction were highly regarded. His specialty was the high rigidity of his friction stir welding machines for steels and other alloys with a high melting point. He also made significant contributions to the design of tensioning devices for aircraft and spacecraft. In addition to project management for several projects at the same time, he was also responsible for hiring and monitoring technical staff. In this position he designed, built and installed friction stir welding machines that are used to weld two different spaceships, two types of aircraft and nuclear fuel rods. The value of the components to be welded is especially high in spacecraft: "If you build machines for the NASA space agency , the component to be welded is usually worth much more than the welding machine," said Koppy.

Manufacturing Technology, Inc.

He then worked from January 2009 to December 2012 for 4 years as a Principal Engineer at Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (MTI) in South Bend, Indiana, after the company with his former employer Transformation Technologies Inc. in a merger had been merged. In this position he was responsible for the development of new machines, mainly linear friction welding machines, but also friction stir and rotary friction welding machines. His duties also included the training and testing of engineers on the subjects of failure modes, specification of electrical components and dynamic as well as structural finite element analysis. At MTI he led a team of up to 6 engineers including subcontractors.

Blue Penguin Corp.

In January 2013, Adam Koppy started his own engineering services company, Blue Penguin Corp in SW Michigan, as a fulfillment of one of his long-term plans.

Fatal traffic accident

Adam Koppy died in a car accident in Cass County, Michigan , at 1:44 pm on June 26, 2013 ; a 15-year-old driver who did not have a driver's license overlooked a stop sign and collided with Koppy's car, causing it to get into oncoming traffic. Upon arrival at the Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital, Koppy was pronounced dead. He left behind his wife Kate and two daughters.
