Adam Thebesius

Adam Thebesius (also Adam Thebes ; * December 6, 1596 in Seifersdorf , Duchy of Liegnitz ; † December 12, 1652 there ) was a pastor and hymn writer .

Thebesius was born as a scion of a Silesian pastor dynasty in Seifersdorf near Liegnitz . After studying in Wittenberg , which he completed with the master’s examination, he became pastor in Mondschütz in 1619 . In 1621 he married. His wife died in 1629, four of his eight children died prematurely. In 1627 he became a senior in the parish of Wohlau , to which Mondschütz also belonged. Shortly afterwards he was appointed to the church of St. Petri and Pauli in the upper town of his home community Seifersdorf. He died there on December 12, 1652.

His preaching style was characterized by the effort to create a logical structure and understandable formulation. Therefore, he renounced Latin expressions. His way of preaching became popular and became known as Methodus Thebesiana .

His song Du great pain man (EG 87) was included in the Protestant hymn book .
