Adam of Perseigne
Adam von Perseigne (* around 1145 near Alençon ; † 1221 in Perseigne Monastery ) was a French Cistercian abbot (from 1188 in Perseigne) and theological writer.
He was a Canon Regular , then a Benedictine , and finally he entered the Cistercian monastery of Pontigny . There he was soon active as a novice master; From 1188 until his death he was abbot. He was widely known as a spiritual teacher and political advisor.
He wrote Latin letters to religious ( Carthusian , Benedictine, Cistercian) and public figures, tracts and sermons. His authorship of the old French poetry Eructavit is controversial . In Rome he met the mystic Joachim von Fiore .
In some letters he deals with the office of novice master, in others he addresses monastic friendship. He also works as a mariologist and is even referred to as "Adam, the very Marian man".
“ Adam is one of the most interesting authors of the Cistercians, completely filled with the teaching of St. Benedict on the fear of God, and even more with the spirit of Cîteaux : he represents a strict asceticism, a great fidelity to the rule of Benedict , a very affective veneration of the Word made flesh God, whom he especially worships in the manger , and an intense devotion to Mary .
