The place was named a city on December 3, 1872, and by 1897 had five hotels within its borders. It was a stopover for the transport company Cobb & Co , which operated a route from Charleville via Cheepie to Windorah . The place became insignificant when a railway line was built and it was not connected to the railway network, but Quilpie. Today Adavale has only 12 residents. In 2006 Adavale and the surrounding area had a population of 93 people. There is a small museum in the historic butcher's building where memorabilia from Adavale's past are on display.
Adavale's temperatures reach 27 to 36 ° C in summer and 6 to 21 ° C in winter.
The place is only accessible today on a dirt road from Quilpie and Blackall . There is a possibility of camping in Adavale.
In 1872 one of the first opal deposits in Australia was discovered near the site .
