His artistic practice is expressed in installations , objects , digital prints, videos and art publications. Much of his recent work includes used or found objects that he sources in markets and thrift stores. He is particularly interested in the recent history of his country and the penetration of everyday life by “total” capitalism. "His criticism and self-criticism are directed against the globally fueled consumer frenzy, which already has the potential for explosion and violence".

In 2015 the Frankfurter Kunsthalle Neue Portikus presented the first institutional solo exhibition under the title “Magic Center”. Darmawan placed the Indonesian publishing house of the same name, which was active in the 1960s, at the center of his show, in which he displayed large-format banners and the covers of various Magic Center publications on the walls and grouped display cases around a chandelier: "... Publications that should be used to improve one's intellectual abilities. Self-optimization, influencing others, character building, the art of doing business and a successful life were subjects of the printed matter. "

In his Singapore Human Resources Institute contribution to the Singapore Biennale 2016, a large-scale installation with paintings, prints, photographs, found objects and furniture, he showed his interest in the history of capitalism and its relationship to contemporary life. "The installation focuses on how Singapore built the skills and knowledge of its people in the context of the history of capitalism in the region, particularly in the 1960s, when the Southeast Asian countries experienced profound socio-political changes."

He took part in the Gwangju Biennale in 2002 , the Istanbul Biennale in 2005 and the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane in 2012 . In 2016 he curated the exhibition Sonsbeek 16 in Arnhem with the ruangrupa collective .
