Documenta 15

The documenta 15 (official spelling documenta fifteen ) will be the fifteenth edition of the documenta , which is considered to be the world's most important series of exhibitions for contemporary art . It will take place in Kassel from June 18 to September 25, 2022 . The music manager Wolfgang Orthmayr was appointed as managing director in April 2018 - as successor to Annette Kulenkampff . On November 1, 2018, Sabine Schormann took over as director general of the documenta.

Preliminary planning

In July 2018, the composition of the search committee was announced.

Finding committee

By the end of 2018, the search committee was tasked with developing a proposal for the artistic direction of the upcoming documenta. The documenta 15 search committee consisted of:

• Ute Meta Bauer - International Curator, Founding Director of the NTU Center for Contemporary Art (CCA), Singapore
• Charles Esche - Director of the Van Abbemuseum , Eindhoven
• Amar Kanwar - Indian documentary filmmaker and artist, New Delhi
• Frances Morris - Director of Tate Modern , London
• Gabi Ngcobo - curator of the 10th Berlin Biennale 2018
• Elvira Dyangani Ose - Curator Creative Time , New York
• Philippe Pirotte - Rector at the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule , Frankfurt
• Jochen Volz - Director of the Pinacoteca do Estado , Sao Paulo

As it became known on February 22, 2019, the commission opted for the artist collective ruangrupa from Indonesia, which was founded in Jakarta in 2000 . The commission justified their unanimous choice as follows: “We appoint ruangrupa because they are demonstrably able to address diverse target groups - including those that go beyond a pure art audience - and to challenge local engagement and participation. Her curatorial approach is based on an international network of local community-based art organizations. We are excited to see how ruangrupa will develop a specific project for and from Kassel. At a time when innovative strength comes from independent, collaborative organizations in particular, it seems logical to offer this collective approach a platform with documenta. "

The group consists of a solid core of 10 artists, the collective includes around 80 people, from journalists to architects to video artists.
