from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amar Kanwar ( Hindi : अमर कंवर; * 1964 in New Delhi ) is an Indian documentary filmmaker and artist . Using the means of documentary film and video installation , he takes up topics of the present and history of the Indian subcontinent. He is particularly devoted to the Indo-Pakistani wars following the partition of India after independence. Works by Kanwar were shown at four documenta exhibitions.

Life

Amar Kanwar began making documentaries in the mid-1980s. The impetus for this was provided by the massacre of Sikhs following the assassination attempt on Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 and the Bhopal disaster in December of the same year. Kanwar's film A Season Outside (1998) takes up these two events.

To date, Amar Kanwar has made more than 40 films and video installations. His films have won awards at the film festivals of San Francisco ( Golden Gate Award ), Mumbai ( Golden Conch ) and Turin (1st prize). In 2005 Kanwar was awarded the newly established Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art , which is given by a foundation of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. Kanwar lives and works in New Delhi.
