Philippe Pirotte
Philippe Pirotte (born April 14, 1972 in Antwerp , Belgium) is a Belgian art historian . Since 2014 he has been the rector of the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main .
life and work
Pirotte was born in 1972. He studied art history at the University of Ghent , where he was an assistant at the art history chair from 1996 to 2001. In 1999 he was the founding director of objectif_exhibitions , an art space and center for contemporary art in Antwerp. From 2001 he worked with Jan Hoet on the catalog for Luc Tuymans ' exhibition in the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale . He gave guest lectures at the universities of Maastricht and Amsterdam.
From 2005 to 2011 Pirotte was director of the Kunsthalle Bern , succeeding Harald Szeemann , where he presented the exhibitions Allan Kaprow - Art as Life (2007), Voids - A Retrospective of Empty Exhibitions (2009) and Animism (2010), among others. curated. After leaving Bern, Philipp Pirotte worked worldwide as a freelance exhibition maker. For the Kunsthaus Zürich he put together the first exhibition of the Chinese film artist Yang Fudong under the title Estranged Paradise (2012) and showed Fifty Days at Sea in the city pavilion of the Shanghai Biennale that same year . He was co-curator of the exhibition Surplus Authors at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. Pirotte is the Belgian correspondent for the art magazine Tema Celeste and co-editor of the Flemish quarterly magazine Andere Sinema . Pirotte writes regularly for the Nka - Journal of Contemporary African Art , the art magazine KunstNu of the SMAK in Ghent, as well as for the London art journal Afterall .
He advises the University of California, the Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific Film Archive there, as well as the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. In 2014 he was chief curator of the La Biennale de Montréal , taking place under the title Le Grand Balcon , at which he also showed numerous works by members of the Städelschule, such as Thomas Bayrle , Haegue Yang and Anne Imhof .
