Philippe Pirotte (born April 14, 1972 in Antwerp , Belgium) is a Belgian art historian . Since 2014 he has been the rector of the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main .

life and work

Pirotte was born in 1972. He studied art history at the University of Ghent , where he was an assistant at the art history chair from 1996 to 2001. In 1999 he was the founding director of objectif_exhibitions , an art space and center for contemporary art in Antwerp. From 2001 he worked with Jan Hoet on the catalog for Luc Tuymans ' exhibition in the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale . He gave guest lectures at the universities of Maastricht and Amsterdam.

From 2005 to 2011 Pirotte was director of the Kunsthalle Bern , succeeding Harald Szeemann , where he presented the exhibitions Allan Kaprow - Art as Life (2007), Voids - A Retrospective of Empty Exhibitions (2009) and Animism (2010), among others. curated. He was co-curator of the exhibition Surplus Authors at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. Pirotte is the Belgian correspondent for the art magazine Tema Celeste and co-editor of the Flemish quarterly magazine Andere Sinema . Pirotte writes regularly for the Nka - Journal of Contemporary African Art , the art magazine KunstNu of the SMAK in Ghent, as well as for the London art journal Afterall .

He advises the University of California, the Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific Film Archive there, as well as the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.
